I SAW MY PONY!!

The title of this post makes it pretty clear that I saw Tim yesterday for the first time in 2 weeks :) I'm halfway through finals and have a reprieve until Monday, so I of course booked it out to the barn and had a fantastic ride. Tim wasn't even that good (he almost dumped me), it was chilly and raining, but I still couldn't keep a smile off my face.

It's finally starting to hit me that I'm running out of chances to ride at CVF... I'm taking Tim home on Wednesday and that will most likely be my last chance to ride at the farm I've come to call home. It's nothing especially fancy and I've often wished for an indoor/trainer, but it's also easily one of the prettiest properties I've ever ridden on. 100+ acres really just can't be beat, not to mention the breathtaking views. I'm going to miss it so much :( So begins our little photo homage to my favorite place in the entire world. I'm gonna get my real camera out next week so I have pictures of the entire farm, but for now, enjoy a ton of iPhone photos!

Tim says 'uhhh this is dumb, mom. Let's go back to the barn now'

No words.

He's not actually this sun bleached.. I just really liked the effect

So cute. and SO fat

Broken

Those of you who follow me on Instagram probably saw the picture I posted yesterday of Tim at Rood and Riddle. I was luckily able to get a last minute appointment with my favorite vet and hauled Timmers to Lexington yesterday afternoon, and thank goodness I did!

The news was not good. He flexed well and was actually fairly sound on concrete, but the vet got a strong positive reaction when he hoof-tested his left heel. Apparently the various angles of his left leg are wonky, leading to much less heel on that foot and most likely causing the ligament issue. Then we went inside to really find out what was going on with the ligament. Dr. N stuck the ultrasound probe on his leg, pointed out all of the structures to me, and then casually stated that Tim has torn all the way through his left check ligament. He was able to do a side-by-side comparison of the left and right legs, which revealed that the LF check is at least twice the size of the right and that roughly 60% of the ligament is damaged. Not only does he have this going on, but I also learned that he has seedy toe and white line disease. YAY ME.

Picture on right: normal check ligament, outlined in yellow

Picture on left: Green outline- Tim's left check. At least twice the size of the normal one. Yellow outline- the torn area
So, what does all of this mean..? Well, for starters, he has to be on stall rest for three weeks. In three weeks, if all goes well, he has a checkup with Dr. N and will have another ultrasound. If he seems to be healing nicely, I will then be allowed to get on him and walk for three weeks. At the 6-8 week mark, we'll have another checkup and ultrasound. Provided that he has healed by then, I'll be cleared to WTC and eventually go back to our normal routine.

During the three weeks of stall rest, he has to be iced twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon, with the hope of minimizing the development of scar tissue. The injured leg also needs to be wrapped after each icing session; dry wrap in the morning and butecort sweat overnight. To add to that, he also needs to have three sessions of Clean Trax, which is a lengthy process that I have personally never gone through before. We pulled his shoes while at R&R yesterday in the hopes that going barefoot, combined with the Clean Trax, will really speed up the hoof healing process and get rid of the white line/seedy toe issue. He also needs to get out of his stall and hand-graze as often as possible... there really aren't enough hours in the day.

In the meantime, I'll be begging my friends to let me ride their ponies and I probably won't update my blog much (not like I have a stellar track record to begin with). I'll post as often as I have something interesting to say, but Tim and I are mostly likely going to go a little (or a lot) stir crazy in the next couple of weeks, so I'll try to spare you all from the whining and the pity party!

Everything Was Good...

Until it wasn't. Basically, I went out to CVF with my school friends today to have a nice, relaxing ride after a long week of classes. I planned to work on our dressage test for the upcoming show and hack around in the gorgeous fields. Got Tim all saddled up and was going to wrap his legs, when I noticed that his LF was puffier than normal. I called everyone into his stall and discovered that not only was his tendon area swollen, but it was also hot and squishy. My BO came back out and we got the vet out there within 15 minutes.

Thank goodness we did... the area was too swollen to ultrasound, but the vet believes he strained his check ligament :( He wrapped it immediately and I'm going to be using a lot of ice and poultice for the next TWO weeks while he is on stall rest. This means no show, no lesson with Dorothy Crowell (former olympian, people), no riding. Two weeks is also an absolute minimum... I won't be cleared to ride unless the ultrasound comes back 100% clean. Considering we don't even know what it looks like yet, I'm not optimistic. Fingers crossed, please!

Our first ever attempt at a triple! It does not seem like this was just two days ago

Loved

Thank you all for your support during this time, it means a lot! I know that we obviously chose to sell Limerick, but I still couldn't contain myself in the days before he left... I was a total wreck. Hillary was there for me through it all and I don't know what I would do without her <3

Just to catch you all up with everything that is going on... First, Limerick left on Monday to be sold. Seeing him walk onto the trailer and pull away from the farm was the hardest part. I was not sure when exactly he would leave (the hauling company said any time on Monday or Tuesday), so I went ahead and scheduled a lesson on my trainer's horse for 12:00 on Monday. Wouldn't you know, the hauling company called Sunday night and told us that they would pick Lim up at 11:00 the next morning. Impeccable timing. I decided to go out to the farm early so that I could start getting both boys ready before I had to say goodbye to Limmers. At about 10:30, I decided that I wanted to take Limerick out and let him graze on the yummy KY grass one last time. Right as I was getting ready to attach his lead rope, I heard the ominous sounds of a large rig pulling into the parking lot... the driver was 20+ minutes early. Cue the water works :( I managed to hold it together well enough to call my mom, sign some papers, and load him onto the trailer, though I think the poor Brook Ledge man was probably scarred by the whole experience and definitely concerned for my wellbeing (haha).

Probably the last time I'll ever see this sweet face :((
Following that terrible-ness, I went back into the barn to get Stormy ready, AKA The Perfect Storm. And perfect, he is! E's youngest daughter rides and competes him at training level, and he's a total saint. He definitely has the potential for some pep, but he mostly jumps anything and everything you point him at without question. He's calm/easy/relaxed, he thinks things through, he's a great jumper, and he's exactly what I want in a horse. My trainer of course knew this, hence why I had two lessons on him this week!! These videos are from the first lesson:

We had to re-do the barrel jump because of our slight wobble in the first video... He's so darn eager that he locked on to the wrong fence!

Stormy on a hack
Meet Stormy! I wish I could just buy him....
In other news, I'm trying a few horses next week. I will post about each one after I see them, but here are the preliminary details that I have gathered:
